Twas Bothersome

Last Fall, a broadcast network introduced a show based on fairy tales. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's been fun to watch and I like how the different fairy tales are explored and shown in fairy tale world and in the real world. I liked where the show appeared to be heading....until the last 10 minutes of the last episode.

The whole premise of the show is that they have been cursed to live in the real world and can't remember who they were in fairy tale world (FTW). We see a heroine and hero who we know are together and happy in FTW during their life in FTW. This is paralleled by what is taking place in the real world. We have been told as the audience that these two people belong together.

The obstacle in real life is that one of these people is married to someone else. The couple is trying to work on their marriage and keep it together. The other person has been supposedly doing what he/she can to avoid the one to whom they are not married. That all changed Sunday when the non-married couple decided to mash their faces together in broad daylight in view of anyone in the town who could see them. This was done regardless of the feelings of the spouse of the one. But we are supposed to believe that this is alright because they were "meant to be together."

When did infidelity become something we accept as good entertainment? When did adultery become so acceptable? I find this bothersome. Yes, the spouse of the one is not someone the script has allowed the audience to get to know, but she is still a human being and deserves to not be hurt by the selfish lack of self control of the other two people. We might not like her very much but we know nothing about her in the real world or in FTW.

No matter who you are or what your feelings may be, betrayal hurts. We can sit back and say that if the Evil Queen had not cursed everyone in FTW to live in the real world then none of this would have happened and no one would have been hurt by their actions. But you can't place blame on someone else when you are solely responsible for your own actions. The end of this episode bothered me and left me with a bad taste in my brain. I didn't cheer that they finally kissed and no matter what someone says, whether they're meant to be together or not, intentionally hurting another person is never an okay thing.
