Since November I have had the most wretched sleep schedule. My cycle has been off, way off. It started out as having my days and nights a bit flipped. I would doze off around 6 AM and wake up at noon. Not a big deal.
Then it morphed into 3-4 hours catnaps randomly taken whenever I would pass out from exhaustion. This turned into falling asleep around 8 AM and sleeping until 3 PM.Or I would fall asleep around 10 AM and wake up at 5 PM. (This last was actually a good thing as at that time I was interviewing for a night shift position 7P-7A.)
Over the past 2 weeks, I have fallen asleep around 3 PM CDT every single day. I wake up between 10 PM and Midnight, wondering what the heck happened. The other day I was Skyping with my sister and she could tell I was on the verge of falling asleep. (I believe her exact comment was, "What in the world are you doing over there?") She graciously allowed me to turn off the computer and promised she would call at 7 PM to wake me up. This did not happen.
Today I was able to make myself stay awake until 3:45 PM. A huge accomplishment. I woke up thinking "maybe I made it to 1 AM." No such luck. It was only 12:14 AM. I had set my alarm to go off at 6 PM so as not to sleep the sleep of the truly sleeping instead of the sleep of the napping. I either didn't hear it or, and this is much more likely, my unconscious, sleep deprived hand turned it off in a fit of rebellion. I'm convinced it is part of a conspiracy.
Apparently my body thinks it should be in Paris and has convinced the sleep cycle fairies to participate in a rebellion over the fact that we are NOT in Paris by putting us on Paris time. The unconscious hand turns off the alarm. The unconscious brain does not hear the alarm or the phone ring. I fall asleep when it is roughly 10 PM in Paris and wake up 7-8 hours later, like many Parisians. I'm craving croissants and toast with jam and butter for breakfast. (As my friend Sarra would say, "Le Sigh.")
Maybe tomorrow I will make it to 5 PM and slowly work my sleeping self around the world and back home to Texas.
You're sleeping like a brand new baby. Bless your heart!
ReplyDeleteLeSigh is correct!! Wow, that is quite the sleeping drama you have going on.
ReplyDeleteIt's best to drink water when you feel like you're about to go to sleep and you shouldn't. And if that doesn't help, get a tiny something to eat. At the very least, do some light stretching.
I hope you can make it!
