The second post I ever made has quite possibly been widely unread by anyone but Melody. Based on today's events in the US Supreme Court, it might be interesting for you to go back and read what I wrote in August of 2008.
California State Amendment to Protect Marriage
Whatever side of the debate you fall on, I always think it is interesting to understand how our government works. How a democracy can not be a democracy when what the people have voted for as a general body can be overturned by a few.
This week there are three ways the US Supreme Court can go based on their decision.
- They can side with the State of California and uphold Prop 8.
- They can side with the State of California Supreme Court and throw out Prop 8.
- They can throw the case out saying it is not worth their time nor their place to make this decision.
This is a precedent setting case just like Brown v. Board of Education and Roe v. Wade.
No matter what you think or how you believe there is intolerance, hatred, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness on both sides of this issue.
You may ask another to respect your way of life when you in turn respect theirs. Personally, I have no desire to tell you what does or does not go on in my bedroom and respectfully, have an even greater desire not to know what goes on in yours. I don't walk around with my heterosexual pride shirt on because I don't think my sexual orientation is any of your business.
That being said, I truly feel that there is more to this issue than whether we as a people allow others to love each other. There are issues that affect children who are innocent participants in events that they do not get to choose. There are issues that will affect adults.
This is more than a simple civil rights issue. We live in a country where it has always been the rule that the majority rules. A 2/3 majority is required in Congress to pass a law. A majority rule defines the parameters around the general election of ALL local, state, federal, and executive officials. If that is thrown out the window, what is the purpose of the Constitution?
If the definition of marriage changes will the definition of "mother" and "father" change as well? What about "husband" and "wife?" In certain countries where same-gender unions are allowed, birth certificates have changed to read "parent" and "co-parent" rather than "mother" and "father." It has become politically incorrect to say that you are a child's mother or father because that is rude to members of society who are homosexual.
I personally am tired of being told that I am intolerant and hateful towards others simply because I believe that a MARRIAGE between a man and a woman has been and always will be the backbone of a society. I have a right to believe that. I have a right to believe that children deserve a MOTHER and a FATHER who love each other and that children have a right to grow up in a home where that love is extended to them. I have a right to say that.
It is not intolerant, hateful, bigoted nor narrow-minded. It is my personal belief and opinion. I have friends who are homosexual and friends whose parents are homosexual. I believe that they have a right to live as they see fit within a Civil Union if that is something that they choose. I also believe that they have a right to live a non-conformist lifestyle where unions between two people take place without a need for government sanction if they so choose.
I do NOT believe that any minority group has a right to impose its beliefs and tenets on another person. To me that is intolerance personified. I do NOT believe that you have the right to tell a religious body that they must bend their doctrines and beliefs to fit yours; that is not and never will be the way it works. I also have the right to believe what I believe just as you do.
And before you leave comments telling me what a horrible person I am, all I ask is that you think about what civil liberties and rights you are asking me to sacrifice. The Health Care Reforms that went into place because of Obamacare violated the beliefs and rights of the Catholic Church when they forced Catholic run hospitals to go against their beliefs and perform abortions in situ and provide the morning after pill and birth control pills to their employees. They violated the rights of healthcare workers who heretofore had the option to NOT learn how to perform abortions as a part of their medical training.
Where will it end? Will I no longer be allowed to attend the faith of my choice complete with the doctrines and tenets established and expect it to be run without interference of the government? Or will a government official inform me that I no longer have the right to worship how, where, and what I may because a same-gender union will NEVER be performed by a member of the clergy? Will they be jailed for refusing to violate their personal beliefs? They had that in the USSR when Atheism was the state-religion. They have that now in The People's Republic of China, North Korea, and Islamic countries. That is not what this country was founded on and not what is ensured in the Constitution of the United States of America.
These decisions have ramifications that echo into the future and you have no control over what happens after the choice is made. You may disagree with me and that is your right and I respect it. Just don't tell me I'm wrong because I don't agree with you. You can cry equal rights all day long and your cries are so loud you can't hear those who are asking that you not take away theirs.
