Art History Wednesdays: A Fail and A Win

I didn't make it to the Picasso exhibit. Mega Fail! I blame my apartment complex and their bizarre need to constantly turn off the water to work on the boiler room or the pipes or a valve. Wednesday and Thursday of last week there was water only between 1 and 4 AM I'm guessing because that is when I got up to use the facilities and the toilet actually flushed. Therefore, I have nothing to report. I've been slightly bummed as The Guggenheim and The Museum of Fine Art Houston were the only stops for this particular show.

In other news....

Earlier today one of my best friends informed me of a class she was pretty sure I would love. Lisa was correct. I'm super excited! Ever since I discovered that professors at different universities all over the world were posting their course materials, lecture notes, reading schedules, and syllabi online I have been "auditing" classes. (There's even an iTunes University where you can watch or listen to class lectures. If you have iTunes, it's located in the store. Check it out.)

Lisa told me about Coursera. I signed up to audit 3 classes this summer for courses that are being taught at Penn State, The University of London, and Brown University. One is Intro to Art just for the fun of it. Another, The Camera Never Lies about world history depicted through photojournalism. The one that Lisa told me about and hooked me--Archaeology's Dirty Little Secrets. (My closest friends know me so well.)

I'm really looking forward to this. School has always been my escape, my personal brand of therapy. Without it...I don't do so well in life. I work so much because I don't like being alone ALL the time and have developed a huge phobia of living in a tent behind the Shipley's Donuts where the other homeless people live in my neighborhood.

I need these classes for a tiny personal win right now. Having a difficult time finding the motivation to do things I actually love. (The lack of ability to shower may have an impact on that these past 2 weeks. It's hard to get out on your days off when you can't wash and freshen up.) Also, I really want to be in the mountains right now but it's not possible. Planning 2 vacations though has helped a bit. The Walt Disney Concert Hall is a planned spot. The Getty Center has daily architectural lectures. They both have free guided tours!! A train journey from San Juan Capistrano to Santa Barbara...ahh. (I am such a nerd.)

I've got lots of things to look forward to in life.
