Soooo.....I'm officially in love with David Cook's new album, This Loud Morning. I think it may be his voice or the lyrics of the songs or something like that. All the songs are fantastic, in my humble musical opinion, but there is one song in particular that I have come to love. My sister can vouch for me because it got played over and over and over on our loopy road trip last week. (Stay tuned! More to come about that later this week.)
I like this song because of the lyrics and how they sit within the music. I attended a lecture last night in Houston where the speaker said that we meet people so that either they can teach us something or so that we can teach them something. They walk into our lives, leave footprints behind and we are never the same again. But sometimes you feel this desire to go back to the person you were before you met them--to erase their footprints. I guess, mainly, because when they walk out of your life sometimes it hurts so badly you wish you had never met them and allowed them to show you the possibilities you are capable of. And sometimes it's because you hate them a little for being the type of person who makes you stretch and won't let you remain complacent or comfortable. Friendship is a love/hate relationship in many ways.
Certain people help make you better and show you that it's okay to dream bigger. When those people exit your life, they leave a void and you feel empty because their friendship is no longer something you can trust. You feel their absence keenly and find yourself wanting to walk up to them and say, "Wasn't that a fantastic talk? Did you see Goddard's list? That's almost my list and I've done some of those things that aren't on my list!" Or you go somewhere and buy postcards you'll never mail because you don't think they would be welcomed.
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is that state your mind enters when you dream. We all need people in our lives who want us to dream bigger. Thank God for them, because they're helping you become the person you were meant to be. If you've seen Inception, you've heard one of my new favorite movie quotes:
"You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, dahling."
Here's David Cook's song, Rapid Eye Movement. I kinda like it....just a little.
