Butcher's last book was published August 2011 and his latest came out yesterday. Brother #1 has devoured it already but I am taking my time, enjoying the feast because the wait between Cold Days and Ghost Story was HARD!!!!! I'm not kidding. I would go to Barnes and Noble and wander the shelves these past 6 months like an addict looking for a dealer. Nothing called my name. I would even call Brother #1 on the phone and tell him I was at B&N and didn't know what I wanted to read. He finally told me I was in Dresden Withdrawal.
If you haven't read the series I highly recommend it if you're a fan of Terry Pratchett, Sci-Fi, Star Wars, Star Trek......basically if you're a character of "The Big Bang Theory" such as myself.
This was such a great addition to the story. Each book stands alone as a great action/adventure tale and tells us more and more about the characters he has created. For me, they're like hanging out with my family. There are so many pop culture and historical references thrown in the mix. My siblings and I can sit for hours and riff on and quote line for line our favorite movies and the dialogue between the main characters is almost the same. There's a bit of swearing that some people have issue with but it doesn't really bother me that much, so use your discretion.
The only thing that didn't feel genuine to the books thus far, was the scene with Titania. The subject of homosexuality came up and felt like Butcher was making a political statement. While I agree with what Harry says, it really didn't fit in the plot line too well. It lost a bit of the story's pacing at this point as it had absolutely nothing to do with they story and probably could have been handled better in a different scene/character setting. It just didn't feel like anything Titania would care about so why she was curious as to his opinion felt forced. It seemed more along the lines of a conversation Dresden would have had with Lara Raith instead. Just my opinion.
- Favorite line in the whole book came from one of my favorite characters.
"'Here there be monsters. ... Run! Run already!" ~Bob the Skull, hysterically, somewhere at the end of chapter 15.
- Favorite scene in the whole book:
When Captain Hook takes off the helmet and Toot gets a look at his unarmored opponent/archenemy. Had to take the computer off my stomach because I was laughing so hard the screen was becoming unstable on my laptop.
I finished it earlier this evening and the twists and reveals were so unpredictable. I love that! I can't say more without spoilers so I will just say, if you read it, email me! I would love to discuss. And, as always, the last page left me satisfied/unsatisfied and dying to know what happens next. Please, Jim Butcher, I cannot handle another 16-18 months wait for book #15. You were putting out 2 different series for several years with a book coming out every 6 months. I need the type of fix only you can provide.
*Sterling also turned me on to Brandon Sanderson's books by convincing me to buy his first novel, Elantris. If you're in the Provo area and looking for a good book, Sterling's the man. Not sure the Waldenbooks is still there or if it got turned into a B. Dalton when Borders went belly-up.
