I decided to spend Thanksgiving at my mom's house. As I was driving up here, I had an urgent need to use the bathroom. I stopped at a gas station, got out of the car, used the facilities, and got back in the car to proceed on my merry way. Three hours later, I stopped for gas. And couldn't find my wallet. I tore the car apart. Pulled up the floor mats, took out all the trash, looked through things where I knew I hadn't put it. And realized that my wallet was gone.
It had either fallen out of my pocket or out of the car when I stopped to use the restroom 3 hours earlier. I called the bank to cancel my debit card and told them what happened. I then asked if there was any way for me to get money. There were no branches of the bank where I was and I needed to know if there were any banks in the area that partnered with them or could do an emergency funds transfer.
The brilliant reply of the bank representative was, "Have you retraced your steps to see if you can find your wallet?"
Honestly, what part of 3 hours ago did you not get??
The next brilliant suggestion, "Can you transfer money to a family member who can bring you some cash?"
I am pretty sure she did NOT get the situation. I was still 200 miles from my mom's and over 200 miles from my home. Hello, Sherlock, no, no one can bring me any money. I am in the middle of nowhere and need to buy gas to continue my journey.
I hung up on her at this point.
Eventually, funds came through a money order that I was able to pick up at the local pharmacy. And I made it safely to my destination without my wallet which contains all pertinent items of identification, state licensing for work, and certification from the Red Cross. And, since it's a holiday, the Department of Public Safety is closed until Monday. The adventure shall continue on my return trip.
This year has been a hot mess. Now I'm just excited to see what new and hilarious adventure December brings. Fingers crossed a certain school district hires me next week.
(As I was typing this my sister asked if she was in it. I asked her if she wanted to be in it. Her response, "What's it about?" "Losing my wallet." "Never mind. I don't want to be in it.")
