One of the things about being single that bites is coming home and having no one to tell about your day. You can't walk in the front door, change clothes, start dinner and say, "I sat for 8 hours in a lecture today that fried my brain and put my backside to sleep."
I did not have the dreaded Physics dream last night thanks to a Nyquil-induced coma. (This doesn't mean I won't have it sometime in the near future though.) I have been having major allergy issues that turned into full-blown cold mode around midnight last Saturday. Spent most of Sunday passed out asleep.....which was super-nice. Now I really need my brain to clear up though because I have clinicals for the next 2-3 days at least and need my brain to not be wrapped in cotton. The last 5 hours of today were rough and it took every nervous twitch I possess to keep myself awake this afternoon. How I made it home amazes me.
Things I learned today about my hospital that I didn't know before.
~Ranked in the top 20 of all teaching medical centers in the USA.
~Level 1 Trauma Center
~Requires all things to be verbally spelled out according to the NATO Phonetic Alphabet to preclude any confusion. Also, all numbers must be said individually. As in, 25 becomes two, five when verbalized. This is to avoid any confusion that may occur.
~The patient safety process is run the same way commercial airline pilots and crew communicate. Airlines experience 1 death in 1 million; hospitals experience 1 death in 1, thousand. We want numbers closer to the airline stats.
~The Heart Transplant Unit--where I work--is brand new! They have only had a few surgeries so far and many more planned for the future.
I had never heard the Josie King Patient Safety Program story before. It is worth watching, especially if you are a parent.
