Art History Wednesdays: Tattoos

It's not big secret that I have always wanted a tattoo. I wasn't allowed to get one as a teenager, so when I moved out of the house at 18 I saved up and planned to get one. Instead I chose not to get one. When my dad was diagnosed with Hep C we were told that each tattoo raises your chances of being diagnosed with Hep C. I was glad I hadn't done it then.

But...

I find that I really, really want to get one. I've seen some gorgeous ones on patients recently and have felt slightly covetous. This has made me wonder about tattoos. Who was the first person who decided they wanted to poke permanent ink into their skin? What was the impetus? What was the significance? WHY???

I know why I want tats, and of what, and where. I know why my sister wants several and where she wants them and why.

My interest has been piqued about the origins and various cultural significance behind tattooing. This might become a trend in the coming weeks as I do some research.

I'm going to the Picasso: Black and White exhibit this week and will post my thoughts and impressions on that show next week.
