Yesterday seemed like a normal day until I heard the terrible news. When you live in a major oil refinement area next to one of the world's largest shipping ports you always dread hearing something like this.
An oil barge collided with another ship.
Galveston Bay isn't that deep especially near the end of the Texas City Dike. But, even one compartment being breached and leaking it's contents into the Bay has devastating effects.
I feel sick. Texas City is a designated bird sanctuary. The residents fish, shrimp, and crab trap for food and to make a living. We tolerate the refineries because it is our main source of economy. Galveston Bay is where I grew up. I've fished out of my uncle's boat near the shipping lanes. I swam on the leeward side of the dike every summer. The Texas City Dike and the local economy in Galveston and Texas City have just begun to recover from Hurricane Ike. This is my home!
It's raining right now and it's as if the whole earth is mourning with us about what happened yesterday.
