Suggestions Would Be Appreciated

Due to continuing issues with my wonderful digestive/endocrine system, I have decided to go gluten, dairy, and refined sugar free. So far I have found gluten-free Bisquick, Oatmeal, and Cinnamon Chex. I've been drinking soy milk for years but how do you replace the wonderfulness of cheese and butter? Anyone else have similar problems? Your input/comments would be helpful. Thanks!

  1. Recently I read a book called The China Study. It was giving scientific reasons why everyone should be vegan. I decided to cut back on meats and dairy because of reading it, but I suggested to my mom that she read it, and she has decided to go entirely vegan. At least for the time being. And she was already on a gluten free diet. If you go to a health food store, there are a number of pastas, breads, cereals, flours, etc. that are gluten free. They also have vegan butter (I have no idea what is in it) and non-dairy cheese (also, no idea what is in it). Here is a vegan recipe blog that my mom uses (and I use sometimes since I'm cutting back on meat and dairy) http://bellybites.blogspot.com/ There are some recipes on there for dairy free macaroni and cheese and other things such as that. I haven't actually tried any of those yet, I just saw that they were on there.

Also, my mom's bread of choice is Ezekiel bread. Technically this is not gluten free, but the sprouted wheat doesn't seem to have any negative reactions for her even though regular bread does.

As for a sweetener, I would suggest Blue Agave Nectar. You can look it up online and see all of the health benefits. I can find agave nectar at my grocery store. Actually I can find a lot of health food at my grocery store, so it may just be the area in which I live. Anyway, I've written you a novel. Sorry. Probably more info than you really wanted, so I'll shut up now. :)

  3. Yeah, GET OFF SOY!!!

Soy reacts in the body like estrogen - it's why body builders avoid it like the plague. Your best bet is goat milk. It's not plentiful, difficult to find and (I'm told) difficult to love. I don't know, I've never tried it, on account of it being difficult to find. I would think, then, that goat milk products are also your best bet - goat cheese, goat butter, etc. And if you love yogurt, go the Greek yogurt route.
Healthy is expensive, so expect to pay a higher price for all of the stuff that makes your insides feel better.
One thing else, you may see if you can find a spa that will do an ion bath for your feet or something like that. I knew a woman in my last ward whose mom does it for others in Utah, and she says it makes a HUGE difference in how she feels. But that's because she doesn't do them regularly. It's like cleaning something every day vs waiting a few months to clean it. The longer you wait to do it the bigger difference there will be, but maintenance keeps things smooth and easy.
