I LOVE MUSEUMS!

- 1956-1986: Three Decades of West Coast Ceramics, 17 Feb - 30 June 2013.
The 2 exhibits coming that I am most excited about this year are,
- Picasso Black and White, 24 Feb-27 May 2013.
- The Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia: A New Beginning, 3 May - 14 June 2013.
If you want more information about these exhibits, artists, or their mediums, I highly recommend that you visit the MFAH library. Any day that you visit the museum to solely study in the Hirsch Library, you can enter for free. The library is open to the public and you have access via their membership to online databases, auction house provenances, and other publications. It is an amazing resource and the librarians are more than happy to assist you in your research. I love them down there because they are so interested in what you are doing and go above and beyond to assist you in finding materials that you might have overlooked in your preliminary research.
The other great thing about art museums is their policies regarding drawing in the galleries. Most museums have specific guidelines that allow you to bring in your own sketching materials to practice your skills reproducing artists' works. It's a great way to keep up skills, practice different techniques, and create your own art for your home. When I was a student at BYU, the Museum of Art always allowed students to bring in their pads and pencils or pastels to copy the art on display.
- What are your local museums?
- Do you take advantage of their free events and activities?
- What are your most memorable experiences in a museum?
I love Museums of Fine Art - my favorite being the SFMFA. I have yet to go to the Phx MFA but I will get there some day. I also want to go to the Music Instrument Museum they have here - BofA give free admission the first saturday of the month.
ReplyDeleteBut since I have my girls I love Children's Museums. they are creative, innovative, hands on and fun fun fun! For adults too! Our Science Center here in Phx is AMAZING! I would love to spend a day there with out the kids.
I am a very visual person and retain information much more effectively when it is laid out in front of me and especially if it is hands on :)
Holly, I have never been to SFMFA but want to the next time I'm in the area. That Music Instrument Museum sounds fantastic! You need to get Blair to take you on a date.
ReplyDeleteWe have an incredible Children's Museum here in Houston and I love the Museum of Natural Science.
I am also a very visual person and learn better when I can take things apart or hold them in my hands. I think that's why working in healthcare has been so easy for me and I learn much quicker than I ever have before.
